Peru, Puerto Maldonado - Amazon Basin
Stayed for our first night in the town at Hospedaje Royal Inn on Ave de Mayo. Very basic dirty run down but big room with cold water bathroom for 35 Soles.
Then decided to go for it and spent 3 nights at excellent jungle lodge Corto Maltes.
Had fantastic wooden bungalow with hot water bathroom. All meals and great guided jungle excursions were included.
This included a dawn walk to a clay lick to see parrots eating, a trip through the jungle to see medicinal plants, a trip by boat to Monkey Island, a boat trip and walk to Lake Sandoval, a walk to see a lookout point over the jungle and a boat to a local farmer who showed us around his fruit orchard. Transport to and from the airport is included. Drinks and water are extra. We went to their office in Puerto Maldonado and booked directly so didn't have the transport from the airport. The owner, George, who is French from Bordeaux like Maria took pity on us lowly backpakers and charged us for 2 nights (US$170) instead of 3. Really great service and a fantastic place.
